TUNIS (TAP) - Tunisian General Labour Union (UGTT) Secretary-General Hassine Abassi said that the government could not, on its own and in this decisive stage, marked by the eruption of political violence, guarantee democratic transition and achieve economic prosperity.
During a meeting with the press, Abassi warned that the country may be trapped into a spiral of violence. He stressed the need to guarantee the success of the general strike on Friday, calling on all the civil society activists as well as the security forces and the national army to ensure that the strike takes place peacefully.
UGTT executive bureau member Samir Cheffi said that Hassine Abassi had received several death threats and that trade unionists do not fear them.
Activities were interrupted in the Habib Bourguiba Avenue in Tunis and in the neighbouring streets after the closing of shops, TAP news agency journalist reported. Clashes are still going on between protesters and security forces who used tear gas to scatter the crowd.
