(TAP) – From the Baths of Antoninus (in Carthage) which hosted, Friday, the diplomatic evening: "Europe in Tunisian fashion" as part of the European Week, European Union Ambassador to Tunisia Patrice Bergamini announced the start, soon, with the support of some member States including France, the renovation works of the Carthage Museum and the Byrsa Hill site, adding that discussions are also underway for the creation of a contemporary art centre dedicated to young Tunisian creators.

Giving more details, he told TAP, that with regard to the commitment shown since last year for the renovation of the Museum of Carthage and the entire site of the Byrsa Hill, Europe will grant a dozen million Euros to preserve all this Tunisian heritage, which is part of a rich Mediterranean heritage and world archaeological and historical heritage.

Besides, Bergamini pointed out that discussions are underway on the legal forms and the financial commitments for the creation, with the support of the Municipality of Tunis and private partners namely the Foundation Kamel Lazar (FKL), a contemporary art centre at the Tunis slaughterhouses. This centre will be dedicated to young creators to showcase the Tunisian know-how so that the whole world can see all this creative effervescence in Tunisia.

The EU official estimated that these commitments are challenges for both Europe and Tunisia, which, he said, “needs the mobilisation of all its energies and talents to move forward," adding that Europe is willing to continue its support to Tunisia with which it shares not only long-standing friendship and co-operation relations but also common values, those of living together, democratic culture, consensus and compromise, as many values that Europe is attached to."

The choice of the venue for this year's celebration of Europe Week, focused on the Baths of Antoninus is not fortuitous, he indicated, specifying that “putting culture in the spotlight tonight means showcasing a whole living heritage...culture is also the link between tradition and modernity, it is heritage, it is craftsmanship and fashion at the same time."

"Europe in Tunisian fashion" is ultimately a way of saying according to Bergamini that "failing to change everyone, fashion makes it possible to better understand the world: Fashion places great emphasis on what make women and men dream of naturally: Creations by Azzeddine Alaia at the service of the beauty of women from Ben Guerdane and around the world, at the Siliana second hand-clothing markets, Tunisian concept stores from Tunis or Djerba which are now exporting their products beyond the North Shore of the Mediterranean, design hubs of Nabeul and soon Djerba and Sfax, where traditional craftsmen and young designers invent a new way of working and living together."
