Task force set up to develop studies for implementation of Tunisian Sahara Project (Minister of Energy)

(TAP) - "A task force made up of representatives of the different ministries was set up to ensure, initially, the task of developing studies needed for the realisation of the Tunisian Sahara development project and its various components, according to a well-defined timetable, Minister of Energy, Mining and Renewable Energy, Khaled Kaddour announced on Thursday,.

Speaking at a workshop on the theme: "Integrated development vision to promote the Tunisian Sahara", organised by the Ministry of Energy, Mining and Renewable Energy, with the support of the United Nations Development (UNDP), he indicated that the project to develop the Tunisian Sahara that will be carried out by the Tunisian government during the period 2018-2035 constitutes a lever of development and a source of creation of new jobs.

He added that this project announced by Prime Minister Youssef Chahed in September 2017 aims at the integration of the Saharan regions in the economic dynamics and strengthening the security system at the Tunisian borders.

Kaddour underlined that the Tunisian Sahara project was presented to international donors (World Bank, UNDP, French Development Agency, German Agency for International Cooperation ...) to obtain funding for its implementation.

The Minister further recalled that the development project is designed in three phases. The first (2018-2020) will allow the installation of 200 megawatts (MW) of solar energy in Borj Bourguiba (Tataouine governorate) with investments of 200 million dinars.

The second phase of the project, which covers the period (2021-2025), consists of the construction of a 500 MW solar station and the development of 15,000 hectares of agricultural land, while the third phase (2026- 2035) will see the installation of a solar station with a capacity of 1000 MW and the development of 30 thousand hectares of agricultural land.
