(TAP) - A Memorandum of Understanding was signed on Tuesday, within the framework of the Project "Valorisation of Bio-resources based on Scientific Evidence in Semi- and Arid Land for Creation of New Industry” (SATREPS).

The signing parties were the Biotechnology Centre of Borj Cedria (CBBC), the University of Tsukuba, the Tunisian company “Herbes de Tunisie” (AYACHI-SAFIR Group) and the Japanese company “NUTRITION ACT”, the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) said in a statement.

The agreement is the result of co-operation between research teams from CBBC and Tsukuba University, as part of the SATREPS project.

The project promotes scientific research activities on biological resources as well as the creation of a new industry in the field of functional foods and nutraceutical products (products or foods sold in tablet or other pharmaceutical form and with positive effects on health), by encouraging cooperation between research organisations and private companies.

The first project “Valorisation of Bio-resources based on Scientific Evidence in Semi- and Arid Land for Creation of New Industry” started in 2010 for five years.

The second part of this project runs through the period 2016-2021, in the framework of public-private partnership.

The Tunisian company “Herbes de Tunisie” specialises in producing olive oil as well as producing and marketing a multitude of medicinal plants and essential oils.

The Japanese company “NUTRITION ACT” specialises in the research and development of neutraceutical products.
