(TAP) – New projects for the benefit of 126 Tunisian oases in four governorates will be achieved as of April 2020, thanks to a loan granted by the Global Environment Fund (GEF).

These projects are part of the continuity of the Sustainable Management of Oasis Ecosystems in Tunisia project, funded by the GEF for the benefit of 6 oases in Tozeur, Gafsa, Kebili and Gabes.

The project, to end in November 2019, has contributed to the improvement of the sustainable management of natural resources and the development of the diversification of livelihood in the targeted traditional oases during the 2014-2019 period.

The social-economic development of the oases, the creation of new job-opportunities, the development of income-generating activities, the promotion and valorisation of the cultural, historic and tourist potential of the oases are also among the main goals of this project.

The six project beneficiary oases are those of Tameghza, Chebika, Mides, El Guettar, Noueil and Zarat. The interventions of the project had helped set up 135 projects, some of which are underway of achievement, Project Co-ordinator Mohamed Zarmli told TAP.

The main projects undertaken in these oases regarded in particular the support of organic farming, production of natural honey, medicinal and aromatic plants cultivation, arboriculture and the improvement of the irrigation system, the same source indicated.
