(TAP) – “The olive season 2019-2020 which will start in November, seems to be promising,” said CEO of the National Olive Oil Board (ONH) Chokri Bayoudh on Friday, indicating that the olive harvest might exceed the averages, according to the preliminary indicators.

Ahead of this season, a meeting is due on Friday to discuss the main measures to be taken to ensure the smooth running of harvesting, he assured at a press briefing, held at the headquarters of the Ministry of Agriculture, Water Resources and Fisheries.

The meeting will examine ways to improve the quality and control of olive oil, to further regulate the market and facilitate the access of exporters and producers to funding, he said.

The lack of manpower for olive picking remains one of the problems faced by the sector, especially as the season is relatively short, he regretted.

Besides, Bayoudh recalled that the ONH has started campaigns against olive pests as part of preparations for this season, stating that 2 million seedlings of olive trees have been treated so far.

The production of olive oil reached 140 thousand tons this year, he announced, underlining that exports reached 117 thousand tons during the season 2018-2019 with revenues worth 1.58 billion dinars.
