(TAP)- The French Development Agency (French: AFD) Tuesday launched the General Monetary and Multisectoral Macrodynamics for the Ecological Shift (GEMMES), a new modelling tool intended to assess financial and monetary risks in interaction with the impact of ecological disturbances in Tunisia.

A research collaboration agreement was inked Tuesday with the Tunisian Institute for Competitiveness and Quantitative Studies so as to adapt this model to the Tunisian economy, the ultimate purpose being to appraise the macroeconomic impact of climate change and take stock of adjustment challenges for the agricultural sector.

The tool will help put in place an economic development model that takes into account climate change and its bearing on several sectors, notably the water sector, said expert in water resources and climate change Raoudha Gafrej at a round-table meeting in Tunis.

Climate change will have a dramatic impact on water resources in Tunisia, the expert said, thus the need to rethink the water management system, rationalise water consumption, notably in agriculture, and fight against pollution.
