(TAP) – A training workshop on the measures and conditions of granting hydrocarbon licences in the Tunisian system has been organised on September 17-18 for Tunis Afrique Press (TAP) journalists.

Hosted by Head of the Natural Resources Governance Institute (INGR) Wissem El Heni, the two-day training session is organised with the support of the German Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung (KAS) Foundation.

Its goal is to help journalists, in particular those reporting on economic and financial information and investigative reporters, to better understand the technical aspects and specifities of hydrocarbon contracts so as to better inform the general public about these subjects and explain them.

“The topic of hydrocarbon contracts is very technical and complicated, which follow-up and management requires a know-how, knowledge and some background,” El Heni said.

He considered that the lack of these competences explains “the populism with which the issue of hydrocarbon contracts is dealt with in several media in Tunisia.”

A set of training sessions was scheduled by TAP during the first quarter of 2020 for TAP journalists but was postponed to Q2 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

In Tunisia, the number of current hydrocarbon research and prospection licences dropped to 25, including 8 of prospection, against 52 before the revolution.
