(TAP) - President Beji Caid Essebsi received, on Wednesday at Carthage Palace, a high-level delegation representing U.S. Government foreign aid agency “Millennium Challenge Corporation” (MCC), who is on a working visit to Tunisia to lay the foundations for an integrated co-operation programme.

The objective of this programme is to help Tunisia reduce the poverty rate, through the achievement of economic and social development.

During the meeting, head of the delegation, Kyeh Kim, expressed the willingness of her agency to co-operate with the Tunisian authorities, with a view to speeding up the implementation of this programme, in accordance with the decision taken by MCC Board of Directors to allow Tunisia to benefit from its integrated programme known as "compact".

The programme aims to finance projects to fight poverty in interior regions in the form of financial donations valued between USD 350 and 500 million, said a presidential statement issued on Wednesday.

Caid Essebsi, for his part, praised this initiative, stressing its importance in supporting Tunisia's efforts to put an end to poverty, especially in interior regions.

The Head of State also underlined that the improvement of citizens’ living standard is an essential condition to guarantee the success of the young democratic experience in Tunisia.
