(TAP) - The number of tourists visiting Tunisia has increased by 33.5% at the end of March 2017, compared to the same period of 2016, to 1 million 235 tourists, said Minister of Tourism and Handicrafts Salma Elloumi Rekik.

Speaking to reporters at the opening of the Tourism Trade Fairs held in El Kram Exhibition Centre, the Minister explained these results by the growth of traditional markets mainly French, German and Algerian (60%).

The Tourism Trade Fairs kicked off Wednesday under the slogan « Recovery of Tunisian Tourism ».

The event will be held for five days and it is composed of five trade fairs; the International Tourism Market (MIT), HORECA EXPO (hotel equipment & services, catering and food industry show), SPA Expo (Spa, hydrotherapy and health tourism show), Boat show and Golf sports show.

The Tourism fairs are held right before the beginning of the summer season in order to allow exhibitors to market their products, and to provide visitors with an idea on the existing offers, so they can make their choice at ease and book in advance.

“This exhibition is of great value. A large enormous number of ambassadors, hotel owners, and travel agencies attend this trade fair, with whom we have great deals of exchange in the Tourism field,” the minister pointed out.

Tunisia, Algeria, Egypt, Indonesia, South Africa, Cameroon and Democratic Republic of Congo participate in these shows.

Khaled Fakhfekh, President of the Tunisian Hotel Federation stressed the importance of the Tunisian market which has regressed over the last three years. He recalled that Tunisians spent 5 million overnight stays between 2015 and 2016.

In a statement to TAP, the representative of a Czech Travel Agency said the travel agency is participating in the fair to meet and arrange deals with partners and hotel owners and to improve market performance.

He reminded that the number of Czech tourists has increased by 50% in 2017 compared to last year. Their number would reach 60 thousand tourists against 32 thousand in 2016.
