(TAP) - At the invitation of the Independent High Authority for Elections (ISIE), the European Union (EU) has deployed an Election Observation Mission (EOM) for the municipal elections scheduled for May 6.

Federica Mogherini, High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice-President of the European Commission, appointed European Parliament member Fabio Massimo Castaldo as chief observer of the mission.

A management team of seven electoral analysts will be based in Tunis as of April 6 and 28 long-term observers will also be deployed as of April 13 across the country. In total, the EOM will have more than 80 observers from EU member States and will observe all phases of the electoral process. The EU EOM is also looking forward to co-operate with other observation missions.

Launching the mission, Mogherini "underlined the importance of the upcoming vote as part of Tunisia's move to political decentralisation as forseen in the Constitution adopted in 2014.”

In a press release on the EU official website, she is quoted as saying:"The EU is committed to a democratic, stable and prosperous Tunisia, and supports the reform process underway in the country, with the aim of ensuring the long-term sustainability of the democratic transition."

For his part, Fabio Massimo Castaldo pointed out « the strong bilateral relations between the EU and Tunisia, and the importance of joint work in the fields of democracy and good governance. »

EU election observers will be present across the country ahead of and during the vote. The mission will present its preliminary findings at the outcome of the vote, followed by a detailed anlaytical report.
