Two arrest warrants issued against Moncef Kartas, another person for "deliberately gathering security intelligence"

(TAP) – An investigating judge in the Judicial Counter-Terrorism Division, on Thursday, issued two arrest warrants against UN security expert Moncef Kartas and another Tunisian national over "collecting security intelligence and data relating to the fight against terrorism and their disclosure in circumstances other than those authorised by law".

Official spokesperson for the judicial counter-terrorism division Sofiene Selliti told TAP once the period of custody is over the case was submitted to the Prosecutor's Office of the judicial counter-terrorism division who authorised an investigation into this charge of the two accused who were questioned for more than 7 hours, in the presence of their lawyers.

Selliti had told TAP last March 30 that Moncef Kartas and another person in custody were able to meet their lawyers.

"Both are the subject of a judicial investigation by the Prosecutor's Office at the judicial counter-terrorism division since 2018," he added. "

He said that the UN expert suspected of spying "cannot benefit from immunity in so far as the case involves personal benefits.”

Under the Convention on the Privileges and Immunities of the United Nations approved by the UN General Assembly on February 13, 1946, "privileges and immunities are granted to officials only in the interest of United Nations and not for their personal benefit," he noted
