(TAP)- Safi Saïd, who is running as an independent candidate in September 15 presidential race, pledged at a campaign meeting Friday in El Hamma, governorate of Gabès, "to give Tunisia back to Tunisians" for "some corrupt people are selling the country to foreigners."

He said he wants to "give Tunisia, its riches, glory and companies back to Tunisians," adding that "time has come to build the country on newly laid foundations of justice, dignity and sovereignty."

"Tunisia is at a crossroads today and the Tunisian people need to choose patriots and intellectuals not corrupt people and holders of foreign nationalities," he said.

Tunisians cannot remain poor in a rich land because of looters, Safi Saïd said, adding that he undertakes to "fight the corrupt."

The independent candidate said the president of the republic has wide powers and needs to be a leader who defends the interest of his people and his country's sovereignty.

He would step down, he said, if he fails as president and would get back to the battle side by side with the people.
