(TAP) - The 2019 presidential election was the focus of a meeting on Thursday afternoon between interim president, Mohamed Ennaceur, and president of the Independent High Authority for the Election (ISIE), Nabil Baffoun.

"I informed the Head of State of the latest developments in the electoral process and the appeals received by ISIE concerning the preliminary results of the presidential election, and their implications for the date of the second round," reports the Presidency of the Republic in a statement, quoting Baffoun at the end of the meeting.

According to the statement, the Head of State reaffirmed his support for the Electoral Authority to overcome logistical difficulties and mobilise all necessary means for the successful conduct of the elections.

The President of ISIE also said that he had discussed with the President of the Republic the "need to ensure equal opportunities" between the two candidates in the second round of the presidential election and informed the President of the "request addressed in this respect to the investigating judge in charge of the case of one of the candidates", in allusion to Nabil Karoui, under arrest.

The ISIE announced on Tuesday that candidates Kais Saïed and Nabil Karoui have reached the top of the first round of the presidential election which took place on Sunday, September 15, 2019 and will compete in a second round whose organisational date will depend on appeals formulated by other candidates against the announced results.

On September 5, the indictment division of the Tunis Court of Appeal rejected Karoui's request for release, prosecuted in cases of tax fraud and money laundering and imprisoned since August 23.
