(TAP) – The Executive Committee of the Tunisian General Labour Union (UGTT) denounced on Thursday "the assault by security forces on lawyers staging sit-in at the Tunis Courthouse, including members of the defence lawyers committee of martyrs Chokri Belaid and Mohamed Brahmi."

“This assault is a violation of the integrity of the courthouse and a breach of the inviolability and the dignity of the lawyers,” the committee estimated in a statement on Thursday, voicing “full support” for the lawyers and their dean, while requiring the prosecution of “the perpetrators” and demanding that “the one who gave the order” accountable.

“The committee understands the concern of the defence group and a large number of lawyers over the deliberate incapacity to rule in numerous cases, notably the refusal of some sides to reveal the truth about the assassinations and the closing of the case of the secret apparatus,” the statement reads.

Besides, the executive committee renewed its request to the public prosecutor and to the judicial authorities to listen to the demands of the defence group, recalling that the UGTT had filed a civil suit in the two assassination cases.

“The UGTT is committed to the establishment of the rule of law and the equality of citizens, in addition to the incarnation of the principle of fight against impunity and independence of the justice,” the union pointed out.

Members of the defence lawyers committee of martyrs Belaid and Brahmi have staged an open sit-in on Thursday morning at the Court of First Instance Tunis1 demanding the public prosecutor to transfer the “secret apparatus” case or to classify it, accusing it of violating the duty of neutrality in this case and to putting the independence of the justice at risk.

The Interior Ministry indicated in a press release that the Public Prosecutor to the Administrative Court of First Instance had requested on Thursday morning the intervention of security units to evacuate some 20 defence lawyers of martyrs Belaid and Brahmi after having broken into his office.
