(TAP) - Nabil Karoui, president of the "Qalb Tounes” (Heart of Tunisia) and a candidate in the presidential runoff election was released from prison on Wednesday night four days before the presidential polls, after being detained since August 23 on suspicion of tax evasion and money laundering.

Karoui, who left Mornaguia amid tight security, was greeted by a large crowd of his supporters and some citizens, without making any statement to the media in front of the prison where the journalists had gathered.

He had previously got out of his car, shaking hands with those waiting in front of the prison, waving his pictures and throwing fireworks in the air.

The Court of Cassation, on Wednesday, ordered his release, declaring the action admissible on the form and merits.

It therefore overturned the decision of the Indictment Division without referral.

Nabil Karoui defence lawyers’ committee announced on Wednesday that it has initiated summary proceedings before the Administrative Court to challenge the decision by the Independent High Authority for the Elections (ISIE) to maintain the date of the presidential runoff election, scheduled for Sunday, October 13 and postpone the polling date.

Kais Saied (18.4%) and Nabil Karoui (15.58%) came first and second, respectively, in the presidential race and are expected to contend in the October 13 runoff.
