HPR's Mourou meets with delegation from OIF election observation mission

(TAP)- Interim Speaker of the House of People's Representatives (HPR)Abdelfattah Mourou Friday met with a delegation from the International Organisation of La Francophonie (OIF) election observation mission to Tunisia.

The delegation is led by Sorin Cimpeanu, Romania's former prime minister, member of parliament and President of the Francophone University Agency.

The meeting turned on strides made in enhancing Tunisia's democratic transition as well as on the features of the election system and needed amendments, the participation of women and students in political life, the experiences of nascent democracies and the role of political parties in political stability.

Tunisia's relations with the OIF and preparations in the runup to the 18th Summit slated to be held in Tunisia in 2020 also took centre stage.

Emphasis was laid on Tunisia's key role in consolidating cooperation and partnership in the French-speaking world and upholding the principles of democracy and human rights.

Mourou briefed members of the delegation about the steps made on the pathway to democracy in spite of current challenges.

Sorin Cimpeanu said voting proceeded in an orderly manner which demonstrates the maturity of the democratic experience in Tunisia.

Members of the delegation said they take interest in the endeavours made by the HPR to uphold the values of democracy and underlined the need to scale up cooperation, particularly in relation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Francophonie.
