(TAP) – The Presidency of the Republic announced Monday evening that President Kais Saied has appointed former minister Elyes Fakhfakh to form the next government "as soon as possible."

"Mr. Elyes Fakhfakh will work towards the formation of a government within one month, non-renewable according to paragraph 3 of Article 89 of the Constitution, and will have to propose the line-up of the government before the House of People's Representatives (HPR) in order to gain confidence," the statement added.

The appointment comes after a series of written consultations conducted by the President of the Republic with parties, parliamentary blocs, coalitions in the HPR and interviews with officials of the most important national organisations and some personalities appointed to the post of Prime Minister, the same source said.

Article 89 of the Constitution gives the President of the Republic the latitude to choose the person he deems best suited to form a government.

"Out of respect for the will of the electorate and the proposals of parties, coalitions and parliamentary blocs, the government to be formed will not be that of the President of the Republic, but the one that will obtain the confidence of Parliament, given that a large number of deputies have suggested the name of the Prime Minister, and therefore the last word alone goes to the HPR when all the members of the government are presented before the plenary session of Parliament", the Presidency stresses.

Elyes Fakfakh, a candidate for the 2019 Ettakatol presidential election, was elected deputy of the National Constituent Assembly (NCA) of this party in 2011. He was later appointed Minister of Tourism and then Minister of Finance.
