Ghannouchi meets with EU EOM's Castaldo

(TAP) – Speaker of the House of People’s Representatives (HPR) Rached Ghannouchi met on Wednesday Vice-President of the European Parliament and Chief Observer of the European Union Election Observation Mission (EU EOM) Fabio Massimo Castaldo.

On this occasion, Castaldo handed over to Ghannouchi the final report of the EU EOM on the observation of the 2019 legislative and presidential elections.

The meeting is part of the European Union’s support to Tunisia to consolidate the democratic process in the country and support it at the economic and social levels.

Castaldo pointed out the need to boost the strategic partnership between the EU and Tunisia, given its importance in Africa and as being one of the EU’s most important partners economically.

The chief of the EU EOM called for “bolstering the parliamentary diplomatic cooperation so as to reinforce Tunisia’s role at the international level.”

Besides, Castaldo referred to the Libyan crisis, considering that it could have security and economic repercussions on Tunisia. He laid emphasis in this regard, on the EU’s role which is endeavouring intensively to find solutions to the crisis.

Ghannouchi commended for his part, the efforts exerted by the EU EOM in Tunisia since 2011, notably its role in reinforcing democracy, the civil society's action capacities and the observation of the elections.

He pointed out the EU's priorities with Tunisia, notably at the economic and trade levels, as well as the need to attract the European investments.

The HPR Speaker also highlighted the importance of boosting cooperation between the Tunisian and European parliaments, voicing in this regard wish to join efforts to solve the Libyan crisis peacefully and under the aegis of the United Nations for the sake of the region’s stability.
