Saïed urges coordination between security forces, army to effectively tackle illegal migration

(TAP)- President of the Republic Kaïs Saïed called for coordination between security forces and the army to effectively tackle illegal migration.

The security approach is insufficient, he said as he made a visit on Sunday evening to the governorate of Mahdia. The priority is to provide jobs to youth and create development projects.

These projects will give young people hope in a better future in their own country and open up new prospects "without them seeking to embark on an uncertain future."

The President praised navy units in Mahdia for their efforts to combat illegal migration, the Presidency Monday said in a press release.

Earlier on Sunday, Saïed made a visit to the port of Sfax. He castigated migrant smugglers, calling them "traffickers in human beings." These are crimes which the State cannot tolerate, he said.

Saied took the opportunity to stress the key role of the Coast Guard in combating irregular migration and reiterated the commitment to strengthen coastal surveillance.

He also said real reasons behind the expansion of this phenomenon must be tackled, stressing the need for enhanced cooperation between countries to find new solutions to the problem of illegal immigration.

The Prime Ministry recently provided the coast guards of the midland region (coasts of Mahdia, Sfax and Kerkennah) with an air unit with highly-sophisticated equipment so as to ensure  night surveillance of coasts.

Italian Interior Minister Luciana Lamorgese met on July 27 with the President of the Republic and Interior Minister in the caretaker government Hichem Mechichi.  The issue of "the increasing flow of undocumented migrants who reach Italian coasts from Tunisia" was discussed.
