(TAP) - Prime Minister-designate Hichem Mechichi, on Monday, pledged to form a government of fully independent experts," whose members will meet the criteria of efficiency, promptness and integrity.

At a press briefing in Dar Dhiafa in Carthage, Mechichi said it was "impossible" to form a government bringing together the political class, in light of the tense climate in the country.

"The political instability in Tunisia in recent years and the economic crisis, in addition to the differences between the political stakeholders, require the formation of a government of economic and social action, in which citizens will be at the forefront of its priorities," he said.

Mechichi pointed out that parliamentary groups and experts were unanimous in underlining the seriousness of the crisis currently faced by the country.

He cited a negative growth rate of 6.5%, a public debt of 86% of gross domestic product (GDP) and an unemployment rate that is expected to reach 19% by the end of 2020.

"Citizens are starting to lose confidence in the ability of the political elite to come up with urgent solutions," he said.

In the same vein, Mechichi stressed the continuation of meetings and consultations with political parties on the government's policy approaches and priorities as, since the achievement of the goals is largely dependent on the support of the parties and parliament, he said.

Mechichi said his government will work to stop the hemorrhaging of public finances through streamlining expenditure, preserving the achievements of the public sector and state-owned enterprises, modernising the system of governance, improving the investment climate, stopping the deterioration of citizens' purchasing power, through the implementation of price control mechanisms and care for vulnerable groups.
