(TAP)– The Democratic Current (Attayar) called for a "serious investigation" after the "heavily armed members" of some police unions besieged the premises of Ben Arous court of first instance.

The move, the party said, was designed to put pressure on an investigating judge in charge of a case of assault against a lawyer which involves the chief of El Mourouj V police station and his assistant.

Different law enforcement officers massed Friday outside court headquarters while lawyers were gathering inside the building.

Attayar denounced the "reprehensible behaviour as well as the irresponsible and illegal practices of police unions and their insurgent members" and said it holds the government and the interior minister accountable.

It also urged unions to abide by the provisions of the Constitution and the law which guarantee officers' right to belong to a trade union without impinging on state institutions and the judiciary or exerting pressure on them through blackmail and threats.

The "disproportionate use of force" against popular protests and arbitrary arrests of young demonstrators were likewise decried by the party, while emphasising the right to freedom of expression and peaceful protest.
