(TAP) - The Tunisian League for the Defence of Human Rights called on Prime Minister Hichem Mechichi to resign and pave the way for "a national dialogue that includes parties, organisations, associations and independents that ends with the formation of a government of national salvation. That government would be assigned specific tasks including working on major issues and urgent reforms to get out of the crisis,» it pointed out.

The League said it made this call after its delegation met Mechichi in the Government Palace on Thursday, at his invitation.

The delegation included its president Jamel Moslem and secretary-general Bechir Laabidi.

«The meeting focused on the situation of freedoms and human rights in light of the turbulent social and economic situation,» it said.

This human rights organisation called on the President of the Republic, the PM and the Parliament Speaker to interact positively with this initiative and begin its implementation.

It also invited the major stakeholders among parties, organisations, associations and independents to meet to activate the initiative and make it successful.

Mechichi last February 12 said he would not resign, stressing that «he is a soldier in the service of the country and that he has a duty towards the country and the state.»
