(TAP)- Coast guard units rescued on Saturday evening in the south-east of El Ataya region off Kerkennah island, 101 illegal migrants of various nationalities, after receiving a distress call from the Miskar gas platform, the Ministry of National Defence said in a press release on Sunday.

The migrants, aged between 1 and 50 years, including 6 women and 4 children, the department specifies, said they had set sail on Friday evening from the Libyan city of Zouara heading for Europe.

Besides, the ministry indicated that they had been taken to the Sfax commercial port, where they were handed over to the National Guard to finalise the legal procedures.

On the other hand, coast guards succeeded Sunday in a second operation, to foil an irregular migration attempt in Djerba, in which 13 irregular migrants of Tunisian nationality (aged between 19 and 39), including two women, had been involved.

The latter were handed over to National Guard at the Zarzis port, to complete the legal procedures against them.
