Representatives of parliamentary groups meet to reach consensus on names of candidates for torture prevention authority

(TAP) - The presidents and representatives of parliamentary groups held, Thursday, a meeting at the Bardo Palace, to discuss the possibilities of reaching consensus on the names of candidates for the board of the National Authority for the Prevention of Torture.

According to the Organic Law on the National Authority for the Prevention of Torture, the renewal of the composition of the body is done by half every three years.

The National Authority for the Prevention of Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment is a public body founded in 2013.

This year, the renewal of the composition of the body, composed of 16 elected members, concerns 4 categories (organisations for the defense of human rights, Expert in child protection, Doctors and retired magistrates).

The candidates were previously selected by the vetting committee of the House of People's Representatives.

Participants in the meeting, chaired by Rached Ghannouchi, Speaker of Parliament, expressed their strong desire to reach a consensus.

In addition, the chairs and representatives of parliamentary groups agreed to hold a plenary session on July 1 to renew half of the members of the board of the Authority for Access to Information and a second session on July 8 to elect members of the Authority for Good Governance and the Fight against Corruption and to complete the election of the remaining members of the Constitutional Court.

The meeting was attended by the first and second vice-presidents of the ARP, and the assessor responsible for relations with the judiciary and constitutional bodies, Mabrouk Korchid.
