(TAP) - The preparation of the "virtual visit" of US Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs Wendy R. Sherman, to Tunisia on June 25, was at the centre of the meeting held on Friday between Minister of Foreign Affairs, Migration and Tunisians Abroad, Othman Jerandi, and US Ambassador, Donald Blome.

"The visit of the US Under Secretary of State is part of the United States' willingness to reiterate its support for Tunisia's democratic experience and to work towards implementing pragmatic economic programmes that meet the aspirations of both parties," a Foreign Affairs Department statement reads.

The US ambassador spoke of the efforts made by the US to support Tunisia in its fight against the COVID-19 pandemic. The aim is to strengthen vaccination campaigns in Tunisia to achieve collective immunity, so as to help revive the economic, cultural and tourist dynamic.

For his part, Mr Jerandi welcomed the United States' support for Tunisia, particularly in the security, economic and health fields. He expressed the wish to see the bilateral strategic partnership receive a new impetus, especially during the next period.

He commended the completion of negotiations on the "Millennium Challenge" programme (a programme of assistance from the United States of America to Tunisia in the field of economic and social development), which will provide a grant of about 500 million dollars to support the national economy, particularly in the fields of transport and agriculture.
