(TAP) - A joint meeting between the Economic and Social Affairs Advisory Committee and the Legal Advisory Committee, under the High National Advisory Committee for the New Republic, was held at Dar Dhiafa in Carthage Saturday.

The event was an opportunity to review the outcomes and recommendations of the meetings of the Advisory Economic and Social Affairs Committee which have taken place over the past two weeks, Secretary-General of the Popular Current party Zouheir Hamdi said.

Speaking to journalists, Hamdi reiterated that "major issues are not the subject of controversy," pointing out that all parties unanimously agree that Tunisia urgently needs "an exemplary constitution which ensures rights and freedoms. It also needs a strong and coherent Executive which acts as regulator and guarantor of the balance of powers".

On the boycott of the referendum on the constitution, Hamdi said the opposition has the right campaign against the referendum, drawing attention to the legal problems facing the Independent High Authority for Elections (ISIE).

The election campaign on the referendum will focus on voting "yes" or "no", the same source said, stressing that boycotters oppose the process of referendum in its entirety and refuse to acknowledge the ISIE's status which is legally entited to rule on applications for campaign participation.

"As long as boycotters comply with the conditions and rules governing the organisation of election campaigns, a major legal problem will arise," Hamdi warned. "The opposition have the right to reject the choices of the President of the Republic and his government’s as well as oppose the referendum," he underlined.
