Tunisia takes over from Bahrain at Presidency of Arab League

(TAP) – Tunisia has taken over from Bahrain at the presidency of the Arab League Council in its 146th session until March 2017 in the opening session of the Ministerial regular meeting held at the league's headquarters in Cairo, attended by the Secretary-General and Arab Foreign Ministers.

Chairing the meeting, Foreign Minister Khemaies Jhinaoui stressed "Tunisia's commitment as Chairperson of the session in the exceptional circumstances experienced by the Arab world to serve the causes of the Arab nation, strengthen Arabic solidarity, one of the tenets of Tunisia's foreign policy, work for the reform of the league and to boost efficiency of joint Arab action. "

"We call on the member states to intensify efforts to help serve the Arab causes, identify joint Arab action at the level of issues and challenges to achieve the aspirations of the Arab peoples for security and growth," he said.

Reiterating the constant position of Tunisia towards the Arab cause, Khemaies Jhinaoui stressed that it "will remain at the top of priority of the Tunisian presidency which will work with other Arab countries and in coordination with the international partners to end the state of lethargy and help efforts and initiatives to revive the peace process so as to allow the Palestinian people regain their legitimate rights and establish their independent state."

The Foreign Minister noted on the other hand "the need to intensify Arab and international efforts to help the Libyan brothers overcome their differences and opt for dialogue and consensus in order to complete the other steps of the political agreement, preserve the unity of Libya and its sovereignty and restore security and stability in the country. "

"We call for support for the Government of National Accord so that it can carry out its missions and fight against terrorism that threatens the neighbouring countries of Libya and the entire region," he added, according to a statement of the Foreign Ministry

In this respect, the Tunisian delegation presented a proposal providing for "strengthening the role of the Arab League and the neighbouring countries in supporting the Presidency Council of the Government of National Accord, the consolidation of the political settlement process in Libya under the aegis of the UN and the assistance of the Libyan brothers to overcome the current situation through the appointment of a Special representative of the Secretary General of the league to monitor the situation, conduct contacts with the various protagonists in Libya and the international parties concerned with the situation in the country to help overcome difficulties that hinder the process of the political settlement. "

Jhinaoui stressed the importance of "joint efforts to achieve the political settlement process in Syria and Yemen, in order to restore security and stability in the two countries, to end the suffering of the two peoples and prevent the dangers that threaten the entire region, because of the chaos, the danger of terrorism and organised "crime.

The Tunisian diplomat had on the fringes of the meeting, talks with the Secretary-General of the Arab League and Many of his Arab Counterparts on "the evolution of the position in the region, ways to reactivate the Arab role in settling Crisis and strengthening the conditions of security and stability.

At the end of the meetings of the session, the Minister of Foreign Affairs held a news conference during which he reviewed with the Secretary General, the main resolutions of the meeting, highlighting the orientations and priorities of the Tunisian presidency of this session.
