(TAP) - The Military Prosecutor’s Office, on Wednesday, said it was "too early" to determine the legal responsibilities in last Sunday night’s collision between a Navy vessel and a boat off Kerkannah.

Eight people were killed and 38 others rescued.

"The investigation is continuing," the Office of the Military Prosecutor said a statement Wednesday.

He added: as soon as it was informed of the accident, the military prosecutor’s office of the Sfax Military Court of First Instance initiated an investigation to determine the responsibilities.

Accompanied by the public prosecutor, the military investigating judge who was charged with the case went to the naval base in Sfax where he made a first review of the investigation.

The Department of National Defence had announced on Tuesday that it had initiated an investigation to identify the circumstances of the accident.

Naval forces continue to search for possible survivors. A diving ship was mobilised at the scene of the accident to find the wreckage of the boat.

Airborne and naval rescue units from Malta and Italy are involved in the search and rescue operations.
