(TAP) - Foreign Minister Khemaies Jhinaoui said democracy can prevent or significantly reduce political and social tension and conflicts.

"This is possible through good governance, a good organisation of political and social pluralism and the achievement of a balanced and equitable economic and social development," the minister said Thursday at a conference held on the fringes of his participation in the 10th Bali Democracy Forum in Jakarta, Indonesia.

According to a Foreign Ministry press release, the FM pointed out that "democracy can be the solution if certain conditions and principles are fulfilled."

It depends in particular, he indicated, on the establishment of a system of democratic governance guaranteeing the participation of citizens in public life.

"The success of democracy is also inherent to the management of difference and pluralism and the consecration of the principles of social justice and equity," said the minister, recalling that "Tunisia has chosen national dialogue as a mechanism to address the conflicting issues threatening its national unity."

This dialogue, which had brought together several organisations and civil society components, has now become a real mechanism that is well respected, he added.

According to Jhinaoui, the national unity government is doing its utmost to achieve two main objectives, namely to create jobs, especially for higher education graduates and to reduce development divides between regions.
