At least 773 persons placed into custody over vandalism and looting acts (Interior)

(TAP) – At least 773 persons have been placed into custody since January 8 for vandalism and looting acts committed nationwide, Spokesperson for the Interior Ministry Colonel Major Khalifa Chibani said on Friday. The detainees had been placed into custody after consultations with the prosecutor, he added.

Some sixty takfiri elements are among the detainees, he pointed out, specifying the acts of vandalism had dropped remarkably on Thursday night.

No acts of looting or damages among security forces and their equipment had been recorded Thursday night, he told TAP.

According to him, arrests of individuals involved in acts of looting, attacks against public property, fires and road blocks had continued with at least 151 persons arrested on Thursday and placed into custody following consultations with the public prosecutor.

Some 54.95% of the detainees are aged between 21 and 30, 31% between 15 and 20, 11.71% between 31 and 40 and 1.8% over 40.

Some of the arrested takfiri elements have been subject to house arrest. They had been involved in acts of looting and vandalism in several regions of the country.

According to Chibani, 97 security officers had been injured in the past few days and some 88 police vehicles damaged during these incidents.

Police stations were set on fire in El Guetar (Gafsa) and Thala (Kasserine) and the office of the police commissioner of El Battan (Manouba).
