(TAP) - Security forces used tear gas on Tuesday to disperse the workers of "Elbene" company who set fire to tires blocking the road leading to the Sousse-Tunis motorway and the national road No. 1 between Sidi Bou Ali and the city of Sousse, Hamadi Tissaoui delegate of Sidi Bou Ali told TAP.

The protesters said they were forced to stage a protest to draw the attention of local and central authorities to their fragile social situations after the closure of the plant and the delay in paying their salaries.

The dairy plant "ELBEN INDUSTRIE" (previously Tunisie-Lait) located in Sidi Bou Ali (Sousse governorate) and specialising in the production of sterilised milk and derivatives had shut down on November 27, 2018, due to claims from State, bank debts and those contracted with milk collection centres.

The company had been in business for 30 years and provides more than 550 jobs.
