(TAP) - Clashes resumed on Friday for the third day in a row in Feriana, a delegation from the Kasserine governorate, between young people and security forces who used tear gas to disperse them, eyewitnesses told TAP correspondent.

Young protesters burnt tires and threw stones at law enforcers, while blocking the city's main road and torching a truck seized at the local National Guard station.

Young people are protesting the release of customs officers whom they accuse of involvement in the death of their relative (smuggler) on Wednesday at the crossroads of the Hachim area linking the delegations of Hassi Frid and Sbeitla, said the same source.

A customs patrol belonging to the regional administration of Sidi Bouzid last Wednesday ambushed several cars loaded with contraband goods from Algeria, a security source told TAP correspondent.

After seeing the presence of the customs cars, the group of smugglers turned back but were chased by the customs patrol which was deliberately harassed and had to shoot in the air to stop the vehicles, the same source added.

“As the smugglers did not want to comply, the customs officers had to fire at the tires of the fleeing vehicles, but one of the shots hit the co-driver of one of the cars that overturned,” according to the same source who said an investigation was initiated to clarify the circumstances of the incident.
