(TAP) – Strong winds reaching more than 100km/h with sandstorms have caused significant damage over the last two days in the various regions of the Kebili governorate (road blockages, falling trees and damage in greenhouses).

In a statement to TAP, President of the Limaguess geothermal agriculture group in North Kebili, Mohamed Rhaïmi, reported on Sunday morning that the wind gusts that occurred on Saturday evening caused the total fall of the structures of 3 greenhouses as well as the damage to two others. More than 700 plastic blankets in most greenhouses were torn, affecting early crops such as tomatoes, peppers and melons, he said.

For his part, the delegate of Réjim Maâtoug, Abdesselem Bouaziz stressed that the gusts of wind and sand phenomena had blocked the roads linking the delegations of Réjim Maâtoug and El Faouar, which required immediate intervention to open up the cities and open the roads for citizens and equipment services.

The same source added that the region has also experienced temporary cuts in the telecommunications network due to the power outage that was restored by the Tunisian electricity and gas company (STEG).

The winds also caused the fall of several palm trees on several roads as well as the fall of a wall under construction at the youth complex on the Tozeur road.

Besides, farmers fear the continuation of the wind, which they believe could delay the vaccination of palm trees, which would negatively affect the harvest.
