(TAP) - Civil society activists and representatives of environmental associations and parties (Ettakatol, the Democratic Current, Machrou Tounes, Nidaa Tounes) observed a protest rally outside the headquarters of the municipality of Sfax on Saturday against the "degradation" of the environmental situation in the region, he said.

The demonstrators express their anger at the lack of implementation, for six months, of the agreement to stop, totally and definitively, the transfer of phosphate through the city.

At its meeting held on December 31, 2018, the Sfax City Council had decided to stop the total and definitive transfer of phosphate through the city, on the basis of the promises made by the Prime Ministry.

The same municipal council had decided to integrate Taparura into the communal area and to draw up an implementation schedule within six months of the date of signature of the agreement.

During his visit to Sfax on April 20 and 21, 2017, Prime Minister Youssef Chahed, called for a timetable to be set for the dismantling of SIAPE (Société industrielle d'acide phosphorique et d'engrais) pollution units, which has not yet been implemented.

This case has been subject to delays, especially with the rejection by the Sfax Regional Labour Union of the dismantling process, on the grounds of preserving jobs within the said company.
