(TAP) - The Jebba fig market opened on Sunday, parallel to the 3rd festival which bears the name of this emblematic fruit of the mountain village located in the northwest of the country (Beja governorate). The festival continues until July 15, 2019, under the sign "Jebba fig, registered designation of origin.

A point of sale from producer to consumer dedicated to the fig of the variety "Bouhouli" has been set up at the mutual fruit company of Jebba. "This variety is unique on the national market," says proudly the president of the festival's association, Faouzi Djebbi, adding that 80% of fig orchards in Jebba are devoted to this variety, which produces two harvests in two months, the "Bither" early harvest and the seasonal fruit.

The current harvest is estimated at 3 thousand tonnes, close to the annual average of 3.5 thousand tonnes.

Jebba figs have been awarded the AOC (Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée) label and are supported by the "Projet d'accès aux marchés des produits agro-alimentaires et de terroir" (Pampat), with the help of UNIDO (United Nations Industrial Development Organisation) and Switzerland. This aid has enabled the development of Jebba figs (dried figs, jams, etc.) and access for this product to foreign markets.
