(TAP) - A project called "Mouton de Sidi Bouzid" was launched on Wednesday in the locality of Jamel (delegation of Sidi Bouzid-est). Costing €2.9 million (9.6 million dinars), two thirds of it is financed by the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation for the benefit of some 100 young people in the region.

The three-year project aimed to develop the breeding of Berber sheep, preserve their breed and export sheep meat to Europe and America.

The project consists of the rearing of a thousand Berber ewes in a pilot complex consisting of five breeding units, a lamb fattening centre, a forage production unit, a sheep breeding centre, a modern slaughterhouse and meat cutting units, national project coordinator, Mnaouar Jemmali, told TAP.

The beneficiaries of the project will be accompanied by specialists from the Office of Livestock and Pasture, as well as the Regional Commission for Agricultural Development, in order to ensure its sustainability.
