Gabès : Genetic analyses on 47 corpses of migrants

(TAP) - The forensic medicine department at the Gabès regional hospital has carried out genetic analyses on 47 corpses of migrants rescued in recent days off Zarzis, Djerba and El Ketf (governorate of Médenine), Regional Health Director in Gabès Riadh Chaouch told TAP on Tuesday. The remains were transferred to Zarzis for burial in a cemetery set up for this purpose.

The forensic team at Zarzis Hospital is continuing the genetic analysis on the other corpses. The department that has received 84 corpses so far, including six this Tuesday, indicates the same source.

The municipal council of Bouchama (governorate of Gabès) held an extraordinary meeting last Sunday to express the municipality will to bury sub-Saharan victims in the Bouchama cemetery.

A migrant boat carrying 86 people from Libya capsized two weeks ago. Four passengers were rescued early last week, one of whom (Ivorian) died, at the regional hospital in Zarzis. Since this shipwreck, dozens of bodies have been recovered from the coasts of Zarzis, Djerba and El Ketf.
