(TAP) – One hundred civil protection officers, reinforced by 16 trucks of firemen, forest agents and the national army, have been fighting for more than four hours to contain a fire that broke out Tuesday afternoon in the hazelnut forest in the Ghardaia district of Beni Khiar (governorate of Nabeul), learned Tuesday evening TAP correspondent from civil protection.

"Operations to control the fire will continue until Wednesday due to the vast extent of the previously undetermined fire," Regional Director of Civil Protection Lotfi Ben Alaya told TAP.

However, he reported significant progress in isolating the fires in order to facilitate interventions to extinguish them.

The regional director attributed the difficulty of responding to the fire at its onset in five different regions to the difficulty of controlling it, noting that high winds have made it difficult for emergency preparedness officers and crews to extinguish it.

The fire destroyed large areas of hazelnuts, grasses and forest trees, it is reported from the same source.
