(TAP) – The quantities of pistachios produced in the Gafsa governorate are estimated at 1,200 tonnes this season compared with 1,600 tonnes last year.

This drop is due to the impact of the climate conditions this year, marked by strong winds and hail fall, said Head of the Crop production at the Gafsa Regional Agricultural Development Authority Abdessattar Ghabtan.

The start of the pistachio harvesting is due as of August, he pointed out, recalling that the most pistachio-productive delegations are northern Gafsa, southern Gafsa, Om Laarayes, Sidi Aich and Sened.

Some 16 thousand hectares of land are devoted to the pistachio cultivation in the Gafsa governorate, 15% of which are irrigated and the remaining are dry.
