Bizerte: "small amount" of oil spills into Zarzouna wharf
21/09/2019 18:54, BIZERTE/Tunisia

(TAP) - An accidental spill of a reduced amount of oil occurred on Saturday at the oil wharf in Zarzouna, Bizerte under the Tunisian Company of Refining Industries (STIR).

Ghassen Zaoui, director general of STIR told TAP that the "small amount" of heavy fuel oil came from an unused pipe.

Steps have been taken to contain the oil spill, including the deployment of floating barriers, with technical support from the company's emergency response services and the Office of the Merchant Marine and Ports.

Zaoui said that the operation to neutralise the spill is underway, adding this accident is insignificant compared to the oil leak that occurred in 2018.

The oil residue spilled on either side of the rocky wharf would come from a pipeline under maintenance.

This operation is necessary before any commissioning of an oil pipeline, according to a source from the technical services.
