Sfax hosts seminar on blue economy and its impact on sustainable development

(TAP)- « Blue Economy and its Impact on Sustainable Development » was the focus of a seminar held Saturday at the High Institute of Biotechnology of Sfax.

The seminar was jointly organised by the Association for Sustainable Development of the Governorate of Sfax (ADDS), the Tunisian Doctors of Sciences (ATDocs) and the Hub National Tunisie "WestMed" (a project funded by the Euopean Union).

Speaking of the potentials, prospects and challenges of marine biotechnology, university teacher, Marine and Environmental Toxicology Amel Hamza-Chefaï reminded of Goal 14 of the SDGs which calls for Conserving and sustainably using the oceans, seas and marine.

Former Transport Minister and head of the Hub National Tunisie « WestMed », Salem Miladi said “Tunisia’s sea area which extends over 135.000 square kilometers represents a reservoir of activities to be exploited as well as an opportunity for smart, sustainable and inclusive growth."

Regarding the specific activities of the blue economy as recommended by Miladi, they consist of aquaculture, coastal tourism, marine biotechnology, ocean energy, seabed mining as well as traditional sectors such as sea transport, fishing, ports…
