(TAP)- Four customs officers in Rouhia (Siliana governorate) were violently attacked by a group of individuals, after having arrested smugglers on Saturday night, spokesperson for General Directorate of Customs, Haïthem Zanned told TAP on Sunday. The injured customs officers were taken to the regional hospital in Siliana.

Two of them were discharged from hospital after receiving the necessary treatment, while the other two were kept under observation. Their state of health is considered stable, hospital director Kamel Ajmi told TAP on Sunday.

According to a police source, a customs patrol in Siliana had intercepted two vans loaded with smuggled fuel between El Hbabsa (Rouhia delegation) and Makthar delegation near El Alâa (in the governorate of Kairouan). Customs officers arrested one smuggler, while a second fled.

While waiting for reinforcements to transfer the seized goods, the customs officers were surprised by the arrival of eight vehicles carrying men who assaulted them by using hunting rifles and threw stones at them. The assailants freed their comrade, took back their merchandise and seized a customs car. The car was later found between Hbabsa and El Alâa.

The local National Guard's criminal investigation brigade took over the case.
