(TAP)- The strawberry harvest has started in the delegations of the governorate of Nabeul that account for around 90% of the overall national production, with 550 ha farmed and a production put at 17 thousand tonnes, according to estimates of the Regional Agricultural Development Commission (CRDA).

Strawberry producers in Korba, which ranks first nationally with 60% of production, are facing a shortage of irrigation water this season.

Speaking to TAP, president of the Local Union of Agriculture and Fisheries Moez Chaouch said the irrigation water crisis is the result of debts of hydraulic groups, drought and the increase in the salinity rate of wells.

The rate of progress of the strawberry harvest has reached 4% in the delegation of Korba, Chaouch said, adding this year’s production is estimated at 9 thousand tonnes on 260 ha farmed.

However, the harvest may be reduced due to the cut-off of irrigation water on 50 ha, according to the official.

The increase in the cost of production is one of the main difficulties encountered by agriculture, says Moez Chaouch, adding that it has reached 60 thousand dinars / ha for this season.
