Sfax-shipwreck: 6 undocumented migrants missing reportedly ran away (governor)
23/05/2020 15:51, TUNIS/Tunisia

(TAP) - The six Tunisians who went missing after the sinking of a boat of illegal immigrants on Friday around midnight reportedly ran away to escape the Coastguard Governor of Sfax Anis Oueslati said in a statement to TAP.

Sea search carried out by Coastguard and civil protection from Saturday at dawn has not given any result, despite the fact that the shipwreck occurred in a shallow area.

The authorities have not been alerted by the families of the undocumented immigrants, which would confirm the theory of fleeing, the governor said.

One man drowned in the wreck of the boat which was carrying about twenty people (all of Tunisian nationality).

Eleven of them were rescued by the Coastguard and the civil protection, while the boat's captain and his assistant fled, not counting the six missing persons.
