(TAP) – The production of tomatoes intended for processing, in Sidi Bouzid, is expected to reach 70 thousand tonnes for the 2019/2020 season, head of Regional Commissariat for Agricultural Development (CRDA) Moufida Kadri told TAP.

The production will decrease compared to previous years; the region recorded production of 120 thousand tonnes in the 2013/2014 season and 91 thousand tonnes in the 2018/2019 season.

This fall is due to reducing the area intended for the production of tomatoes, she added, saying that Sidi Bouzid governorate is third in tomato production after Nabeul and Kairouan.

Seasonal tomato producers have faced problems for several seasons, she said.

She indicated the absence of standard contracts binding producers and manufacturers, the absence of professional compilers who work according to specifications, mentioning the need to start packaging the product in collection centres to protect it from rotting.

The seasonal tomato sector also suffers from the delay in receiving and processing the product by industrialists outside the governorate, as well as the illegal intervention of intermediaries who impose low prices on farmers.
