(TAP) – The Scientific and Technical Committee in charge of listing the Island of Djerba as a UNESCO World Heritage will commence the stage of developing a management and protection plan for this cultural site, to be integrated into the World Heritage List, by involving all the main actors among civil society, municipalities and administrations.

During a press conference held on Sunday night at the Association for the Safeguard of Djerba Island (ASSIDJE) seat, committee president Mongi Bourgou indicated having received, last February, a positive response regarding the inscription file of the Island of Djerba on the World Heritage List.

This approval was formulated on the condition that changes be made in certain aspects which the United Nations finds incomplete, in particular with regard to the protection of mosques.

The committee will launch, on the basis of the observations of the organisation, a broad participatory operation bringing together the inhabitants of the city of Djerba, the local authorities and several parties who will be invited on Monday to a workshop on the island.

This workshop will focus on the development of a 10-year cultural property management plan that sets out the vision for action and protection, Bourgou specified.
