(TAP)-Two illegal immigration attempts from the coasts of Sfax were thwarted by local security units on Friday night and 14 people were arrested over forming a gang to organise illegal crossings.

The Interior Ministry said in a statement Sunday eight people were arrested on the beach of Sidi Mansour as they were preparing for an illegal crossing with a fishing boat.

These people admitted having coordinated with a person from the region to participate in this crossing in exchange for sums ranging from 3000 to 3500 dinars per person.

During the same night, police officers in the district of Sfax arrested 6 other people who were preparing an operation of illegal crossing from the coast of Sidi Mansour and seized a hydraulic motor and a quantity of gasoline.

The arrested persons admitted that they had travelled to the region with the intention of participating in an illegal immigration operation with the help of a local in return for sums between 3,000 and 3,500 dinars per person.

The Public Prosecutor's Office has ordered that a judicial inquiry be initiated against the persons arrested that the necessary legal proceedings be pursued and that the organisers of both operations be included in the wanted lists.
