(TAP)- Medics and paramedics in the governorate of Gabes will mobilise to carry out more than 1,000 COVID-19 tests per day, Governor of Gabes Mongi Thameur said Thursday.

In addition, in coordination with the Ministry of Health, a mobile military hospital will be set up in El Hamma to conduct tests and assist patients, he told TAP.

These emergency measures come after a case of death from COVID-19 was recorded in the local hospital in Gabes.

On the other hand, the local committee to fight the spread of COVID-19 in Gabes decided at its meeting Thursday to tighten preventive measures by announcing the total shut down of mosques in El Hamma and Western El Hamma, besides banning weekly markets in all delegations of Gabes.

The governorate of Gabes saw, until Wednesday afternoon, 79 cases of local infection with COVID-19, most of which were recorded in El Hamma.

Director General of the National Observatory of New and Emerging Diseases, Nissaf Ben Alaya will head to the governorate of Gabes Friday to monitor the epidemiological situation in the region.
