Medenine-COVID-19: Traders in Ben Guerdane claim reopening of Ras Jedir border post
21/09/2020 18:44, TUNIS/Tunisia

(TAP) - Several traders in Ben Guerdane have observed for two weeks a sit-in in Choucha, blocking the road from Ras Jedir to Ben Guerdane in protest against the closure of the Ras Jedir border post.

The protesters are claiming the reopening of the post to all passengers, especially since heavy trucks for bilateral trade are allowed to access it.

They regret the deterioration of their activities due to the COVID-19 pandemic in addition to the impact of the closure for about seven months of this crossing point which is the main source of boosting commercial activity in the region.

In a statement to TAP, governor of Médenine, Habib Chaouat, said that the post is closed as a precautionary measure to preserve the health situation in the region against the risk of infection and spread of the virus.

He said that its reopening depends on the implementation of a health protocol to ensure the protection of passengers, asserting that this protocol is being developed by the authorities concerned in both countries (Tunisia and Libya).
